GEM Projects specialises in the use of fly ash as a backfill material. Fly ash backfilling has a long history in coal mines, given the usual close proximity of Power Stations.

The use of fly ash in backfill for the following reasons:

  • Lowest cost option

  • Fly ash is complementary to the cement binding reaction whereas tailings requires more cement to cure

  • Fly ash is a waste product from Coal Fired Power Stations, comprised of round spherical <150 micron, amorphous incombustibles

  • Dry pneumatic handling = fully sealed handling

    Design and delivery of fly ash injection of 4000m3 into old coal mines in Borehole and Dudley seams below the new Honeysuckle Drive Development.

  • F3 Highway, Abigroup

    Engineering Manager responsible for project financing and engineer for 100,000m3 of fly ash grout to fill old underground workings below the F3 freeway near Beresfield, NSW.

  • Creek Subsidence Repairs, BMA

    Project Manager for wet fly ash grout injection into subsidence creek bed cracks in Crinum Creek (50m3) and Issac Rivers (160m3). This delivered via agi trucks and concrete boom trucks to various locations on the creek bed.

  • Newcastle Courthouse, APP

    Design and delivery of fly ash injection of 7000m3 into old coal mines in Borehole and Dudley seams below the new Newcastle Courthouse.

  • Grasstree, Anglo

    Design and delivery of fly ash grout into a inflated bag 5m x 5m x 3.5m to rebuild a pillar at cut though 33 that was mined but needed to be reinstated for pillar safety factor.  To deliver this pillar replacement Tim organised a grout bag, a 305m borehole and 400m3 of grout and underground supervision.
